Road to 50

Turning 50 Changed Nothing. Here's What Actually Changes You.

Nobody tells you the truth about turning 50: nothing happens. Here's what I did about it, and what actually changes you.

I posted a 60-second video the night of my birthday dinner, and I said the thing nobody wants to hear: nothing happened.

I woke up the same woman who went to bed at 49. No switch flipped. No wisdom arrived overnight with the cake.

I think we're set up to expect more. Fifty gets talked about like a door you walk through, and you come out the other side a different person. Mine felt like a Tuesday with candles.

Fifty is forty, with better judgment

That's the honest version. You're the same person, only wiser.

I protect my peace more. I have less patience for nonsense. My no's are harder, and I don't explain them anymore. I know what I like and what I don't, and that took time to learn.

The birthday doesn't change you. What changes you is the small thing you decide to do on purpose.

The small thing I did

I took myself to Rosemary Beach for my birthday, alone. Four stops that summer, and I'd shared every one of them with someone I love: my daughter in Chicago, my siblings in Charleston, my best friend in Philly, my mom and friends at a concert. The last one was just me.

What shifted was small. I sat on the beach for hours, really enjoyed it, and nobody rushed me. I watched the sunset every single night, with no agenda and nothing to perform.

You don't have to book a solo trip. Mine was small, and it was the only part of turning 50 that felt different.

If you want fifty to feel different

Pick one small change. Make it this month, not on the birthday. You don't need a milestone to start.

What did you do for a milestone birthday? Tell me in the comments.

Until next time,
