The $40 Console That Anchors My Living Room

thrifting

I wasn't going to spend $2,000 on a console table that wasn't even real wood.

When I moved into my new home, I needed a console table. I looked at West Elm and CB2, and the pieces I liked cost around $2,000 and weren't real wood. I couldn't make myself pay that.

So I went thrifting instead. In the back corner of one store, something was pushed up against the wall behind other furniture. I had to move things out of the way just to see it.

It was ugly. But I loved the details, and I knew I could make it beautiful. It was $40.

I didn't want a gloss finish. I used chalk paint, in black. I wanted it bold but not overpowering. Elegant. A little sexy.

Now it has storage I use, and it's the anchor of my living room.

The best pieces are usually behind something.

If you're shopping for furniture right now, here's what this one taught me. Look in the back corner. Move the stuff in front of it. Look at the details, because paint can fix the rest.

Tell me in the comments: what's the best thing you've ever found hiding in the back corner of a store?
