The Table: Four Years of Dinners With My Adult Kids

Me and the kids at dinner

I have dinner with my adult kids once a month. I've done it for four years, and I know them better now than I did when they lived under my roof.

That's The Table. Here's how it works.

I ask when they're available. I don't announce a date and expect them to show up. I ask, and we plan around their schedules.

I build it around what they enjoy. My kids are foodies, so dinner was the obvious choice. My son picks the restaurant every time.

I keep it easy. No agenda. No pressure. I let them talk, and I don't interrogate them.

No phones. Good food and real conversation.

We always end with a group picture. Every dinner, every time.

If you're an empty nester wondering how to stay connected to your adult kids, start with a standing dinner. Pick a day. Let them choose the place. Show up.

Watch The Table on YouTube, and tell me in the comments: what's the tradition you keep with the people you love?

Until next time,
